Educate for the Future Charter Schools Resolution

WHEREAS, local public schools in San Diego are closing the achievement gap and investing in students with the greatest needs by implementing evidence-based strategies, providing stable learning environments, and employing highly skilled education professionals;

WHEREAS, charter schools with privately appointed boards do not represent the public but make decisions about how public tax dollars are spent;

WHEREAS, the Democratic National Committee’s 2016 Party Platform states: “Democrats oppose for-profit charter schools focused on making a profit off of public resources. We believe that high-quality public charter schools should provide options for parents, but should not replace or destabilize traditional public schools. Charter schools must reflect their communities, and thus must accept and retain proportionate numbers of students of color, students with disabilities and English Language Learners in relation to their neighborhood public schools. We support increased transparency and accountability for all charter schools.”

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the San Diego County Democratic Party (1) calls for legislation that requires all schools utilizing public funding to be democratically governed and subject to local school district authorization and control; (2)  opposes for profit Charter schools and Charter management organizations,  (3) supports charter schools following the same public information, transparency and conflict of interest laws as public schools  (4) supports traditional public schools and charter schools working together to ensure a coordinated approach to meeting the educational needs of their communities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution is sent to all members of the San Diego County legislative delegation to the State Assembly and Senate as well as all San Diego County Democratic Clubs.
