Judicial Elections

The San Diego County Democratic Party has made an endorsement in one important local race at the end of the list of judicial items on the ballot. We strongly support for Matt Brower for Superior Court Judge, Office 37. His incumbent opponent is Gary Kreep -- a Tea Party “birther” who has been reprimanded for bias and other misconduct on the bench.

There are also numerous State Supreme Court justices and Appeals Court judges on the ballot this year. Those incumbents were all appointed by a governor, but they are put to a yes-or-no vote every 12 years to remain in office. Sitting judges in these nonpartisan offices are almost always retained by voters unless there’s a major public controversy.

The Democratic Party has not taken a position on the Supreme Court and Appeals Court candidates. However, several of our Democratic Clubs have conducted their own research and offer these recommendations:

Associate Justices of the Supreme Court

  • Carol Corrigan -  NO
  • Leondra Kruger - YES

Associate Justices of the Court of Appeal

  • Joan Irion - YES
  • Judith Haller - NO
  • Richard Huffman - NO
  • Patricia Benke - NO
  • Cynthia Aaron - YES
  • William Dato - YES

  • Richard Fields - YES
  • Art McKinster - NO
  • Marsha Slough - YES
  • David Thompson - NO
  • Raymond Ikola - NO
  • Thomas Goethals - YES
