Candidates and campaign managers have a lot of responsibilities, from fundraising to getting out the vote. It's important for campaign leaders to bear in mind that they're also responsible for running ethically sound and legally compliant organizations.
The County Democratic Party is launching a new training module -- Responsible Campaign Leadership -- to help those organizations understand their obligations in keeping with current laws and Democratic values. The event will include an overview of applicable labor laws and best practices to prevent and address harassment and discrimination in a campaign environment.
Some background on our trainers:
Ricardo Ochoa is a union-side labor lawyer and the founder of Ochoa|Law, which represents the San Diego Labor Council, the San Diego Building Trades Council, the American Federation of Teachers, and numerous other labor and social-justice organizations in Southern California. Ricardo teaches Labor Law at California Western School of Law and is also the General Counsel to the Campaign Workers Guild, a national union of campaign staff.
Eva Posner is founder and president of Evinco Strategies, LLC. She has worked in politics since 2014 and has filled roles in field, fundraising, operations, and communications in over 30 campaigns and political organizations in Southern California. During the 2018 cycle, Eva oversaw two million-dollar races and worked for two PACs that helped to flip California’s targeted House districts and bring the “blue wave” to Congress in the midterm elections.
The training will be on Wednesday, June 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Elijah's Restaurant, 7061 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego (92111). It is open to the public and particularly recommended for anyone running for office or working on a campaign. There is no cost to attend, but RSVPs are required.
