WHEREAS, Some leaders of the Democratic Party, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Governor Jerry Brown, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez, and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chair Representative Ben Ray Luján, have publicly indicated that support for abortion rights should not be a litmus test for Democratic candidates and elected officials, and
WHEREAS, Research demonstrates that since 1980 women have voted at higher rates than men, that over the past 36 years, the gender gap between the parties has averaged 8% in the Democrats’ favor, that in 2016, when the Democratic Party Platform was strongly pro-choice, the gap was 24 points, the highest ever recorded, that 69% of Americans believe that Roe v. Wade should not be overturned, including 84% of Democrats and 53% of Republicans, and
WHEREAS, Because women's autonomy over their bodies is a human right necessary for protecting their physical and emotional health, for ensuring gender equality, and for establishing and sustaining the economic security that A Better Deal focuses on and because policies limiting access to family planning and abortion care disproportionately impact low-income women and women of color, support for reproductive rights is inseparable from economic and racial justice, now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that the San Diego County Democratic Party Central Committee, recognizing that one in three American women will have an abortion in her lifetime and that desperate women have always and will always find ways in which to terminate unwanted pregnancies even at the risk of their lives and health, calls on the California Democratic Party not only to reaffirm its commitment to reproductive choice but also to make a public announcement that it will endorse only those candidates who support access to safe, legal, affordable abortions for all women regardless of economic status, and now therefore
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that California Democratic Party Chair Eric Bauman be requested to transmit a resolution memorializing this position to the DNC, DCCC, and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
