Resolution Supporting Safe Storage Of Firearms Ordinance

WHEREAS, senseless gun violence is an epidemic that requires urgent action at all levels of government;

WHEREAS, many instances of gun violence occur in homes where firearms are not secured, often involving children or those struggling with mental health issues;

WHEREAS, 4.6 million American children live in homes with at least one loaded and unlocked firearm and child suicide by firearm has increased 60 percent from 2007 to 2014;

WHEREAS, most unintentional child gun deaths can be prevented by responsible firearm storage practices that prevent kids from gaining access to guns;

WHEREAS, owning a gun is a personal decision, but responsible storage of firearms is a public safety issue that concerns all of us;

WHEREAS, the gun lobby and the extremists in the NRA have blocked common sense gun safety laws in Congress, forcing states and cities to take action to prevent gun violence;

WHEREAS, California’s strongest in the nation gun laws and the San Diego City Attorney’s nationally recognized Gun Violence Restraining Order program have saved countless lives and additional measures to prevent senseless gun violence are urgently need;

THEREFORE WE RESOLVE TO SUPPORT the SAFE STORAGE OF FIREARAMS ORDINANCE, authored by San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott, which is common-sense gun safety legislation to reduce accidental shootings of children and gun-related homicides and suicides by requiring that firearms in a residence be safely secured or disabled by a trigger lock.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution shall be distributed to all members of the San Diego County Democratic Party Central Committee, all Presidents of chartered clubs, members of the City Council and the Mayor of San Diego, and that we authorize the Party Chair to take action on our behalf to support the passage and implementation of the Safe Storage of Firearms Ordinance.
